Mark Kirk, member of the powerful Appropriations Committee where he serves on three subcommittees that approve of the budgets of the Departments of Justice, Commerce, State, Veterans Affairs and Defense, is one of the most impressive members of Congress and a leading voice for a woman’s right to choose, funding for public education, sensible reforms to reduce gun violence, environmental protection and support for Israel.
In four straight elections (2000-2006), Rep. Kirk swept endorsements over his opponents by the Chicago Tribune, Sun-Times, Daily Herald and News Sun. Some of his many accomplishments include:
Pro-Choice: a 100% rating from Planned Parenthood for his perfect record defending a woman’s right to choose and stem cell research.
Public Education: legislation that has received the endorsement of the National Education Association to mandate full funding for special education, Impact Aid programs, and college cost reduction.
Reducing Gun Violence: an “F” grade from the National Rifle Association for his co-chairmanship of the Task Force Against Illegal Guns.
Environmental Protection: “Hero of the Alaskan Arctic” Award for his defense of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. His legislation includes increased car fuel efficiency standards, tax credits for hybrid cars, increased tax on oil companies, and banning sewage dumping in Lake Michigan.
Support for Israel: Legislation to block terror payments to Hamas and Hezbollah, extend the Iran Sanction Act, press the World Bank to end disbursements to Iran and open access to Holocaust archives for survivors.
